- The Martin XB-51 was an experiment jet bomber that first flew in 1949. The XB-51 was unique in that it was a tri-jet aircraft-Housing 2 jet engines under the forward fuselage, and one jet engine in the tail. Testing of the XB-51 continued until 1956 when the program was cancelled. The XB-51 deployed many advanced features that would go on to other aircraft. The XB-51 was cancelled in favor of the Martin B-57 Canberra.Â
